A is for Alibi (Kinsey Millhone Alphabet Mysteries, No. 1) Review

I started reading the "Kinsey Millhone" series with O, I think. I found it good enough to finally get around to the A book, which I think is one of her best, plot wise. And...
1. Grafton puts in too much extraneous detail _" it was a white frame house" (if you've read a few of her books, you'll get the joke - they all seem to be W F H.
2. She doesn't finish her stories well. More than once I turned the page expecting 10-15 more pages and found I was on the last paragraph! Deus ex machina. Like a High school student who realizes that that they have written the required amount and finish with "The End".
3. So why do I rate this so highly????? Grafton observes things that we all know about, and harpoons them squarely. I can't tell you the number of times she has got me to break out laughing. eg "she was conservatively packaged like the complimentary gift wrap in a classy department store." I think it's funny!
4. Kinsey, the protagonist, is pissy. She is not perfect: She knows she is not perfect: She is not going to become perfect. I love it!
5. Grafton invented the "all purpose dress".

A is for Alibi (Kinsey Millhone Alphabet Mysteries, No. 1) Overview

A tough-talking former cop, private investigator Kinsey Millhone has set up a modest detective agency in a quiet corner of Santa Teresa, California. A twice-divorced loner with few personal possessions and fewer personal attachments, she’s got a soft spot for underdogs and lost causes.

Eight years ago, Nikki Fife was convicted of killing her philandering husband. Now she’s out on parole and needs Kinsey’s help to find the real killer.

If there's one thing that makes Kinsey feel alive, it's playing on the edge. When her investigation turns up a second corpse, more suspects, and a new reason to kill, Kinsey discovers that the edge is closer—and sharper—than she imagined.

Fun read from cover to cover - Mesmerix - Toledo, OH USA
(No Spoilers) 'A' is for Alibi was originally written in 1982 by Sue Grafton as the first book in her Alphabet Mysteries series. After seeing the 'U' book smash bestseller lists in 2009, I decided I needed to read these. And, being that I'm neurotic about such things, I had to start at the beginning.

I love a good detective story. Grafton's main character is Kinsey Millhone, a tough chick P.I. operating along the west coast. The book is well-written with quirky characters, interesting locales, and a structured murder mystery plotline. There's nothing spectacular about the novel, it didn't rock my literary world, but it was a fun read from cover to cover. It was never slow or boring, and it kept me hooked all the way through. A quick read, entirely fun, and recommended at 4 Stars, and I will continue with this series.

Fabulous series!! - V. Jones - Sharpsburg, Georgia USA
I started with "A" and never stopped until I read "U" a few months ago. This is a terrific series with wonderful character development, outstanding story lines, comedy, drama, etc. I look forward to every new "letter" and will be devastated if they ever stop!

Amazing Series! - Annette Sobolak - San Diego, CA
Let me just say, this woman is an amazing author. The second I get any of her books, I can't put it down. I know I chose "A is For Alibi" but if I can choose the entire series, I would. It always manages to keep me on my toes and I can't put them down. I love the main character and I love her personality. This is a great addition to all those who loves thrillers.

My Favorite Female Detective! - -

After reading Carol O'Connolls mysteries featuring her female detective "Kathy Mallory" I was desperate to read a murder/mystery with a protagonist that was likeable. Kinsey Milhone, the "star" of Sue Graftons alphabet series, is a breath of fresh air! Iread all of them at my public library and bought several on my Kindle, with plans to buy ALL of them in the near future. Kinsey Milhone is someone I identify with...a woman who does the best with what she has.And her friends and associates are featured throughout the series, and as she learns more a bout them, so do we. The supporting cast are well thought out and written, and there are no curve balls in subsequent books that ruin the character or plot development. Besides Kinsey, I LOVE her landlord/friend Henry, and local barkeep and cook, Rosie. Sue Grafton never fails to deliver, and my only complaint is that the books aren't a couple hundred pages longer! Ms. Graftons books are well worth the the time and THE MONEY!!! That's my highest compliment.
