Holiday in Death Review

#7 in the series, and the stories keep getting better. This time Eve not only has to deal with the vicious Santa Claus killer, but also with her first Christmas with Roarke. I'm finding that I am as much interested in the details og Eve's life as I am with the main plot, which is, as always, a well-crafted and tightly written thriller. Furthermore, in this one I didn't figure out who the killer was until about ten pages before Eve did. That is good. I hate when the clues are so obvious that I don't understand why the detective hasn't seen what I saw. The delight for me in this story was seeing how Eve gingerly negotiates what it means to have people in her life about whom she cares enough that she has to think about buying presents for them! I think she did pretty well, and look forward to the day when she includes Summerset on her Christmas list.
Another facet that I liked was the way that Robb is slowly deepening the relationships between Eve and Peabody and Mira and the other people that she is drawing into her orbit - and also that she is continuing to grow their relationships. Here are the beginnings of a romance between Peabody and McNabb! Another great read.

Holiday in Death Specifications

In the seventh of J.D. Robb's futuristic romance thrillers, NYPD Lieutenant Eve Dallas is on the trail of a serial killer terrorizing the city during the holidays. The only link between the victims--all are patrons of an exclusive dating service, Personally Yours. Working with her aide Officer Peabody, Peabody's nemesis Ian McNab, and her own intriguing husband, Roarke, Eve uncovers secrets that link the victims: secrets that involve both the owners and the clients of Personally Yours and which might be worth killing for. Whether she's writing as Nora Roberts or as J.D. Robb, Roberts weaves a taut and powerful story with lush sensuality and masterful characterization. This murder mystery combines elements of romance, science fiction, and police procedural genres in an entertaining mix that will keep readers turning the pages. --Lisa Wanttaja

A decent mystery trying to get out... - Cynthia K. Robertson - beverly, new jersey USA
I like a good mystery, and decided to try Nora Roberts' (writing as J.D. Robb) Holiday in Death. This was my first Robb and somewhere in this book, there was a decent mystery trying to get out. It seemed that Robb couldn't decide whether this book should be a mystery, science fiction, or a romance novel.

The year is 2058 and it's getting close to Christmas. Lt. Eve Dallas works for the New York Police Department, and is called to the scene of a gruesome murder. Security tapes show that a man dressed as Santa Claus entered the victim's apartment. Once inside, he drugged, raped and then killed his victim. When finished, the murderer made her up in expensive make-up, painted a fake tattoo that read "True Love," and left an expensive piece of jewelry depicting the First Day of Christmas. Not long after, a second victim is found--The Second Day of Christmas. The link appears to be an upscale dating service called Personally Yours. Each time Dallas gets a lead, it turns out to be a dead-end. Dallas wants to catch the guy before he kills 12 victims and proposes putting out a "Santa-warning." But New York officials want to prevent mass hysteria so close to the holiday, which would keep shoppers and tourists out of the city. The killer is bold and brazen, and Dallas hopes that his cockiness causes him to make a mistake.

The mystery itself was decent. But I was very turned off by the explicit sex scenes. I don't feel that they added anything to this book. A woman I know who is a fan says that Robb includes three of these in every book. She just skips them. Why bother? The futuristic-angle was also a disappointment. But I will admit that this is my first book by Nora Roberts and I'm starting this series in the middle. However, there is not much here that would entice me to pick up another one. I'll stick with my favorite mystery authors including Michael Connelly, James Lee Burke, Sue Grafton, etc.

Short story - Nancy J. Shoemaker - Annapolis, MD
This is not a full length book. It is a short story that was published in a collection that I have already read called "Silent Night". Good story, but not what I expected. I've read all of the JD Robb "in Death" books, but thought I had found one I had missed. My fault for not having a list to refer to before I ordered.

Holiday In Death - D. C. Stigall - Gleason, TN
Book in good condition. Received in a timely manner. I really enjoy reading the "In Death" books by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts). Eve Dallas & Roarke are a fantastic crime fighting team with a wonderful relationship.
