Timeline Review

This was a great action packed novel that kept me entertained all the way through. This was a great tale of time travel to a much more violent time period. The characters definitely weren't great but the strength of the plot more than makes up for this. There was also an inconsistency in the author's description of time travel but this did not bother me a lot since the book focused on the action/adventure while the science aspect was just a minor point. This was a fun read all throughout and a recommend it heartily to anyone looking for a good yarn.

Timeline Overview

In an Arizona desert a man wanders in a daze, speaking words that make no sense. Within twenty-four hours he is dead, his body swiftly cremated by his only known associates. Halfway around the world archaeologists make a shocking discovery at a medieval site. Suddenly they are swept off to the headquarters of a secretive multinational corporation that has developed an astounding technology. Now this group is about to get a chance not to study the past but to enter it. And with history opened to the present, the dead awakened to the living, these men and women will soon find themselves fighting for their very survival–six hundred years ago. . . .

Timeline Specifications

When you step into a time machine, fax yourself through a "quantum foam wormhole," and step out in feudal France circa 1357, be very, very afraid. If you aren't strapped back in precisely 37 hours after your visit begins, you'll miss the quantum bus back to 1999 and be stranded in a civil war, caught between crafty abbots, mad lords, and peasant bandits all eager to cut your throat. You'll also have to dodge catapults that hurl sizzling pitch over castle battlements. On the social front, you should avoid provoking "the butcher of Crecy" or Sir Oliver may lop your head off with a swoosh of his broadsword or cage and immerse you in "Milady's Bath," a brackish dungeon pit into which live rats are tossed now and then for prisoners to eat.

This is the plight of the heroes of Timeline, Michael Crichton's thriller. They're historians in 1999 employed by a tech billionaire-genius with more than a few of Bill Gates's most unlovable quirks. Like the entrepreneur in Crichton's Jurassic Park, Doniger plans a theme park featuring artifacts from a lost world revived via cutting-edge science. When the project's chief historian sends a distress call to 1999 from 1357, the boss man doesn't tell the younger historians the risks they'll face trying to save him. At first, the interplay between eras is clever, but Timeline swiftly becomes a swashbuckling old-fashioned adventure, with just a dash of science and time paradox in the mix. Most of the cool facts are about the Middle Ages, and Crichton marvelously brings the past to life without ever letting the pulse-pounding action slow down. At one point, a time-tripper tries to enter the Chapel of Green Death. Unfortunately, its custodian, a crazed giant with terrible teeth and a bad case of lice, soon has her head on a block. "She saw a shadow move across the grass as he raised his ax into the air." I dare you not to turn the page!

Through the narrative can be glimpsed the glowing bones of the movie that may be made from Timeline and the cutting-edge computer game that should hit the market in 2000. Expect many clashing swords and chase scenes through secret castle passages. But the book stands alone, tall and scary as a knight in armor shining with blood. --Tim Appelo

Timeline - Judy Wilson - Benton Harbor, MI
Since I'm not that interested in mid-evil times, I wasn't that excited with this book. If you do like that particular time in history and you like sci-fi then this is the book for you. I also watched the movie and it was pretty true to the story.

Read Disclosure or Rising Sun instead - TCO - USA
Timeline describes a rescue mission performed by several graduate students going back to the Middle Ages to rescue their professor. Most of the book details sword battle style escapades. Unlike Crichton's corporate thrillers, this book dragged. I ended up skimming a lot of it, especially the action sequences in the Middle Ages.

Some of the flaws included (spoilers):

-length: At almost 500 pages, the book feels padded and dragging.

-action unrealistic: The action was much too repetitive. The characters had near escape after escape and it was unlikely they could get lucky so often. The wandering from place to place (three castles counting the green chapel, a monastary and a fortified mill, seemed aimless and unlikely. Many times the characters separated for not good reasons (petulance or laziness) but I never worried they would recombine. Given the students were all graduate students, one of which was an amateur medievalist (but far from a trained warrior), their success in combat seems unrealistic.

-archeology unrealistic: At the beggining of the novel, their is a huge complex reconstruction going on with only a professor and students running it. The amount of work involved would seem to require more. In addition, the students seem to have incredible amounts of time for archery, scuba diving, etc. while still progressing such a huge research project. And doing so during semester breaks. Just unlikely.

-research over-shown: It's obvious that Chricton (or someone he paid) did a lot of research on quantum technology and the Middle Ages. This research is overshown, with several long passages of explanation between characters. Also, several long descriptions of architecture and the like within the middle of fight sequences. Note: the Middle Ages research (seems) to be pretty accurate and interesting...but just never draws one in during the story. The quantum research is silly and spending long times describing it is even sillier. Would have been better of with a faster blither hand-waving.

-Inconsistence of time travel: geographic transport to the appropriate place (including a displacement from New Mexico to France) is never explained. Supposedly, the communication is to different universes (alternate timelines), but the historical events are the same as our world and events from the past seem to be able to affect our present (objects left are discovered) and agents cautioned not to bring objects back that are anachronisms.

-Poor explanation of commercial significance: We don't get a good reason for why the peroid chosen was chosen (as opposed to say the Crucifixion or the like). In addition, instead of obvious things like hiding relics, to then find and sell them (to finance the project), the objective seems to have been to get better reconstructions.

-characters not well done: Only the corporate characters really seem realistic, although Donniger is over the top. The grad students seem to be both too crudely differentiated AND unrealistically competent in action AND unappealing. There's also no main character.

-subplots not finished: we never find out about the New Mexico policeman's resolution or why the one old man went back to the past unauthorized.

-maintaining secrecy on such a project also seems very unlikely.

----------------------------------------

Net, net: too long, too many unrealistic details, not sufficiently entertaining

I read this book years ago before the movie came out, so I appreciated the book more than the movie.

Life Support Review

I reallly love Tess Gerritsen's books. She writes wonderful stories that scare you to death and that are very fast paced. Aptly described as a page turner, they are very hard to put down.

Where she shines in the genre is in character development. Somewhere on the roller-coster ride story, you come to know and care about her characters.

This story is about a single, thirty-something ER doctor, who is also taking care of her vulnerable, alzeheimer's afflcited mom. The local ER is a small town type where there are ups and downs in activity, but usually on the low to mid area.

Her life takes its first turn when in one night she loses a cardiac patient to death and loses a confused elderly patient to (well no one knows). He was in the ER strapped to a bed when the cardiac patient arrived, and then he was no where to be found.

From there the pace revs up until Dr. Toby Harper is being attacked from all sides. She is being attacked at work for incompetence, and (well I won't give up the whole plot to you), leave it to say, she is even being accused of murder and the police have a warrent out for her arrest.

I will tell you that Toby is a caring and tenacious lady. She is smart and not easily thwarted when she senses that something is very very wrong. This is why she is in trouble. The forces out to get her are real, rich, well respected in the community, and will do anything to shut her up. (Sort of reminds you of Coma).

I would recommend this book for anyone intersted in a fast paced, well written medical thriller.

Life Support Overview

New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen weaves authenticity into another novel of searing medical suspense, as a dedicated woman doctor probes into the cause of a mystifying and lethal outbreak.

The quiet overnight shift at Springer Hospital ER suits Dr. Toby Harper just fine -- until she admits a man in critical condition from a possible viral infection of the brain. The delirious man barely responds to treatment -- and then disappears without a trace. Before Toby can find him, a second case occurs, revealing a terrifying fact: the virus can only be spread through direct tissue exchange. Following a trail of death that winds from a pregnant sixteen-year-old prostitute to her own home, Toby discovers the unthinkable: the epidemic didn't just happen -- someone let it loose....

Life Support Specifications

Former romance author and medical doctor Tess Gerritsen is writing in a new genre: medical suspense. Advertised as her "first novel," Harvest jumped onto the New York Times bestseller list and thus legions of new fans were introduced to the work of this talented author. Gerritsen's second thriller, Life Support, is as moving as any of her romances. Dr. Toby Harper works the night shift in an emergency room. More comfortable with the steady horror and tedium of emergency care than with a normal lifestyle, Toby alienates herself socially from her peers and from her sister. She spends her daytime hours alone with her mother who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. When elderly Alzheimer's patients from the same retirement home start dying mysteriously, Toby is the only one suspicious enough to investigate. As a result she finds herself, her mother, and her own sanity at risk.

What's Happening Here? - Jayne P. Bowers - SC USA
Short but still a thriller, Life Support had my attention right away. Who was doing what to this teenaged prostitute? And why? What did it have to do with the sudden deaths of older people, including Dr. Harper's mother?

Gerritsen's medical expertise is obvious in this chilling novel. What is killing these elderly but apparently healthy people? Is there more than one culprit involved in this coverup operation? Will Dr. Harper figure out who the bad guy is before it's too late? I missed Rizzoli and Isles in this book but knew there had to be a surprise ending in which things would work out for the good guy or gal with or without their assistance. I wasn't disappointed.

Read it! - Jillian R -
This is one of those books that I find hard to summarize without giving away spoilers or too much information, sometimes even the ending. So this time around, I will not try to write one.

However, I can say that this is Tess Gerritsen's second medical thriller book. Tess Gerritsen is one of my favorite suspense/thriller authors, if not my ultimate favorite. This novel did not fail.

If you have a faint-heart, can not stand even the slightest mention of blood, then this is probably not for you. Because just on the very first page, there is already a mention of these things; things that Gerritsen describes so well.

I really love Gerritsen, as you, by now, can already see. She writes all the scary things that get to your head at night (not talking about ghosts though), and her books are fast-paced and has so much action that you can't dare miss.

Life Support is not an exception. It was good. Read. it. =)

Supreme Justice: A Novel of Suspense Review

Although it is not a believable story, Phillip Margolin's fictional novel is a fast paced easy to read and an enjoyable summer read with numerous interesting yet some undeveloped characters and a couple fun twisting plots.

Set in modern day Oregon, Sara Woodruff is tried twice charged for murdering John Finley her former boyfriend who turned out to be alive while she was on death row, and turns up murdered with Sara being charged again.

Murder, suspense, blackmail, deceit, clandestine operatives--this book has it all. People in high places are not all they appear to be, yet some are more.

I enjoyed the many surprises the author weaved through the various plots as he moved back and forth through five years between 2006 and 2011 and kept this reader guessing.

This was a fun and quick read and leaves me wanting to read more Phillip Margolin books.

Supreme Justice: A Novel of Suspense Overview

New York Times bestselling author Phillip Margolin returns to the corridors of power in Washington, D.C., with an exciting thriller about a ghost ship and the President's nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Sarah Woodruff, on death row in Oregon for murdering her lover, John Finley, has appealed her case to the Supreme Court just when a prominent justice resigns, leaving a vacancy.

Then, for no apparent reason, another justice is mysteriously attacked. Dana Cutler—one of the heroes from Margolin's bestselling Executive Privilege—is quietly called in to investigate. She looks for links between the Woodruff appeal and the ominous incidents in the justices' chambers, which eventually lead her to a shoot-out that took place years ago on a small freighter docked upriver in Shelby, Oregon, containing a dead crew and illegal drugs. The only survivor on board? John Finley.

With the help of Brad Miller and Keith Evans, Dana uncovers a plot by a rogue element in the American intelligence community involving the president's nominee to the Supreme Court, and soon the trio is thrown back into the grips of a deadly, executive danger.

With nonstop action, Supreme Justice picks up where Executive Privilege left off, putting readers right back where they were—on the edge of their seats.

Pelican Brief On Steroids - Mae Adamson - Los Angeles, CA USA
I think I have read all of Phillip Margolin's books and I would call myself a fan of his. I look at his books as the literary equivalent of candy and he consistently does a solid job of writing fast-paced, legal thrillers. Supreme Justice is a follow-up to Executive Privilege and contains many of the same characters.

This book follows the Margolin playbook pretty well all the way through. I don't consider his books to be sticklers for realism but this book struck me as particuarly preposterous, with multiple attempts on the life of a Supreme Court Justice, a president being bribed to name a replacement Justice (and where did that scene come from anyways? just what evidence does the bad guy have on the current president that would make her do whatever he wants?) and impostor assassins placed in some of the most important positions of our country's legal system (could the police really be fooled by armed men calling themselves representatives from Homeland Security just because they say so?).

Despite my criticism, I have to admit I still enjoyed the book. To call it fast-paced would be an understatement. The book moves at breakneck speed and I could not wait to get to the end to see how it would all play out. With all that being said, how much is there really to complain about?

The Continuing Decline of Margolin - Matthew Erwin - Virginia
Phillip Margolin has always been one of those guys that has played along the edges of being a major writer. In the end, he has generally wound up being the book you pick up in the airport for half price. He has had some major high points such as "Gone, but not Forgotten." Sadly Supreme Justice falls solidly into his low point category.

Fresh off the takedown of a crooked President and his serial killing wife in "Executive Privledge," Brad Miller and his new fiancee Ginny Striker go to DC in order to follow new job opportunities.

Brad works clerks for a Supreme Court Justice as his reward for investigative work in the last book. Ginny starts working at a law firm that conviently holds the major bad guys and the answers to some of the tepid questions the book poses.

By painful coincedence, it is Brad's Justice that causes a riff in the court over a cert case of a woman on death row. She is nearly murdered by an assassin but is saved by, surprise, Brad Miller. So launches the story. Also appearing are Dana Cutler, the PI from the first book and Keith Evans from the FBI. I can buy the setup for Executive Privledge happening in that book, but to get wrapped up in another major conspiracy involving CIA directors and Justices just a few months later? That is stretching it. What is the next book, Miller and Striker take down the Speaker of the House and the Sec. State?

The book chops back and forth between 2012 (the book's present) and 2006 to the murder of a possible drug dealer/intelligence agent by a cop. Sadly, the book telegraphs the major plot points of flashbacks, so they become almost pointless.

It is a book hampered by bad writing. In one scene our FBI man mentions that the FBI can solve any case but can't figure out why there isn't anything good on TV. Really, that 30 year old joke is recycled. Maybe it simply padding as the book is a thin volume already, crashing in around 300 pages with Pattersonesqe chapter sizes and font size. The whole book has the feeling of a novel that was not born out of any good idea, but rather a manuscript deadline.

It is also predictable. As each character is introduced you can pretty much guess what they are going to be. You are the red herring, you are the real killer, you will end up dead. Etc. Etc.

Don't get me wrong, it is not an offensively bad book, but it is well below par. Hopefully Margolin can return to form in future books. But the trio of Miller, Striker and Cutler are certainly not strong enough to carry a third book.

Margolin Dos it again - Gamer -
Like all of his books this one wasa fun read with a great mystery and beleivable plot. If you read other books by Margolin you will enjoy this one. I hadn't read his books in some time and had forgotten how good they were.

Weekend Warriors Review

I have not finished the book yet, but from what I have read, I love it. I like the books by Fern Michaels, but was a little reluctant in buying it at first because I was thinking it was going to be another romance novel and I really didn't want romance novels because of late I am more into the mystery/suspense. I am so glad I did purchase it. I cannot wait to read the rest of the books in the series. Midway through the book I am already deciding who I like. Almost cried in the beginning when Barbara was killed. The fact that it is women out to get revenge makes it even better. There is a problem with the justice system, it doesn't always work, so the idea of vigilantism with women taking the problem in their own hands makes it even better.

Weekend Warriors Overview

Nikki Quinn is devastated when her best friend Barbara is knocked down and killed by a hit-and-run driver who claims diplomatic immunity. But Nikki has her work and her lover, fellow lawyer Jack Nolan, to keep her going, whereas Barbara's mother, Myra, has nothing. Festering in a sea of recriminations and hatred, unable to gain a sense of perspective, Myra is lost . . . until one day she switches on the evening news and sees Marie Lewellen, mother of a murder victim, take matters into her own hands and stab her daughter's killer.

An idea is born, and within months Myra and Nikki have drawn together a group of women who have one thing in common: they have been failed by the American justice system, they're down but they're not out, and they're ready to find their nemeses and make them pay. First up is Kathryn, a long-distance truck driver who was raped at a road stop by three motorcyclists as her paralysed husband watched, helpless. Banding together, the Sisterhood plot the ultimate revenge -- but with dissension from inside the group and out, there's no saying if the plan will work until the moment of truth arrives.

Disapointed - Lori - Naples, FL

I will not continue with this series. Stories are too far fetched.

EXCELLENT START FOR AN ENGAGING SERIES - Joseph Yeater - Hampton, GA USA
Page turning start for a series of guilty pleasure readings. Characters with interesting back stories keep you caring what happens to each of the "girls". Secondary participants are equally adept at keeping you turning pages with fairly witty dialogue (with NO GRATUITOUS SEX!! yea!!) and involving scenarios. Of course, the plots are far fetched, but who cares? This is a fun read and the continuing saga promises to be equally entertaining.

shame-ful - M. White - Albia, IA United States
This book was crap! It makes me SICK & ANGRY that the majority of its reviews glorify it. That it's dubbed not-for-the-faint-of-heart. That my friends loved it. That they thought-lessly recommended it to me with declarations of how "awesome" this series was! What kind of sheep have we become, that we accept this error riddled TRASH that is void of sensible plot or character development, we call this a novel?

This is a rape/revenge "novel" THAT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN WRITTEN BY A FIFTH GRADER! I literally felt my I.Q. plummeting as I read this book. I didn't feel that the author had any REAL concept of rape or of revenge. Rape is ugly, disturbing, horrendous, sickening, brutal, and painful. Never delight-ful or entertaining as some reviews have described Weekend Warriors. This book's de-value-ing, sugar-coated, juvenal treatment of it is shame-ful. With the obscene amount of money seemingly at the disposal of the characters, it would have made more sense if they had just hired Batman to go exact their revenge for them, perhaps he comes in to play later in the series(?)!!

Forever-more I will cringe and shutter with disgust when the name Fern Michaels is uttered in my presence.

The Malacca Conspiracy Review

On the back cover it says, "Hang on...and hold your breath!" - they weren't kidding!! Action happens from the very first chapter and doesn't stop until the end. I'm grateful to have received a review copy of a book that shows evil trying to take over and the people fighting back the darkness, for the sake of freedom and safety for all.

It took me a few chapters to get into the rhythm of this author's writing technique. Don Brown's style keeps the reader engaged and has them on track by noting the location a scene taking place. For example, it might say 'Rasa Sentosa Resort, Sentosa Island, Singapore 11:16a.m.', which helps make sure the reader's mind is set for the situation ahead.

This author masterfully weaves together a chilling, action adventure story told from a panorama of different points of view. I was astounded at how Don Brown wrote all these scenes from different parts of the world and kept it all on track. It was like watching a movie and having it smoothly pan from one event to the next, connecting them all seamlessly. I loved it!

This author shows evil being unleashed on this planet by people who would do unimaginable things to themselves, and others to achieve their goal! Most of these deeds are unbelievable to our way of thinking and were quite disturbing to read. Don Brown served five years in the U.S. Navy and "gained an exceptional vantage point of both Navy and the inner workings of 'inside-the-beltway' political operations as an action officer assigned to the Pentagon." This explains his insider point of view and how he took the reader behind closed doors in meetings with the President and the Security Council, while planning the next military action.

Don lays out a terrorist attack, a surprise to many, and a global nightmare for all. What does it look like when a mad man takes power and has several nuclear war heads at his disposal, then starts making demands?

Don Brown brings back two of his favorite characters from The Navy Justice series, Zack Brewer and Diane Colcernian, to help catch the person masterminding these attacks at sea. Zack and Diane are sent to the front lines to gather clues in helping catch the evil doer and uncover where the next attack would take place.

Robert Molster - N.Y. Merchantile exchange, is contacted as an adviser for any unusual activity at the stock exchange market that might shed light on the group behind these brutal attacks. Robert's documents show how one sect made billion overnight. "They could buy a ton of nuclear weapons for forty billion...if somebody was willing to sell...my guess is for that kind of money, they could find a seller!" It was scary and fascinating how the stock market could be manipulated and used to fund terrorist attacks.
Also, it was intriguing, and a little scary, to read how information is gathered and told to the president and his counsel, so they can come up with a counter-attack. This author has a believer in the White House.

Mark Williams is president and the bible verse he is standing on is in Philippians, "anxious about nothing, but in all things bring your petitions and requests to God. And the peace of God, that passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."

He addresses the nation and says, "Islamo-fascists may have temporarily bruised us, evil cannot, and shall not, ever quench the heart and the spirit of America. We are grateful to God almighty that we still live as a nation."

Don Brown has a gift for getting into the skin of whoever's point of view he's writing from. I was drawn into all the scenes he wrote about, even he minor ones. It's amazing how our military has to be on alert 24/7, trained to look at things differently than you and I do. I also understood why things are kept top secret and current info isn't broadcast on the nightly news. There would be so much panic and people would be paranoid of everyone around them, it would create such havoc. It was unnerving how many years the evil ones planned their attacks. And, sleepers are activated by a phone call to perform the evil task at hand.

This novel was one thrill ride full of action, suspense, drama and some romance. It was definitely entertaining and scary to think how many of these things could happen in current time. It also reminded me to pray more for our military, the people that run our country and for our President. This was a book that made you think and appreciate our government and our military, and to get on our knees to pray for our nation. I can't wait to read another book by this master storyteller.

My first experience reading Don Brown was positive. The plot about a terrorist threat to the Straits of Malacca and Indonesia was interesting and sent me researching an area I was unfamiliar with. Were parts of the novel far fetched- of course. That's way it is called fiction. Overall, a good read for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Hangman: A Decker/Lazarus Novel Review

This book was super - with two possibly parallel plots, Decker is at his best in juggling the various caseloads and side characters at the department, each with their own quirks and habits. That's not the only "reunion" as this entire book is filled with characters we have of late seen much too little.

One disappearance, one murder, are they connected or not - and if not, then we've got two cases to solve.

We get a larger glimpse than we have recently at the Decker home life, because one of the plots results in the Deckers taking a stray teen into their household, who is a few years younger than Hannah (who is 18! Where did the years go?).

The new character, Gabe is, along with his parents, fascinating, and without giving too much away I suspect we'll see seeing more of him down the line. I very much enjoyed Gabe sharing his view of the Deckers, their life, and Hannah's school, by mental comparisons to his own. His dry observations probably echo some of those for whom the Deckers are now familiar strangers, rather than "just like my own family."

Hannah's, "You think we're normal, well let me tell you," had me rollicking. It was hopefully intentionally funny. :) (I'm pretty sure it was.) Not to mention shows how well Hannah has turned out, and what an astute observer of human nature she has become.

Kellerman is always good, and this is one of her best.

My question about my own early dementia - two of the characters are from Decker's past. I don't remember a book with the characters, am I being forgetful (in which case I need to reread it) or is this merely a technique, referring to an older case to which we, the readers, were not then privy.

Hangman: A Decker/Lazarus Novel Overview

Murder, a missing woman, and a sociopath from the past sweep Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus into a labyrinth of mystery and danger in this electrifying new tale of suspense from New York Times bestselling author Faye Kellerman. . . .

Fifteen years ago, high school senior Chris Whitman went to jail for murdering his girlfriend, Cheryl Diggs. Propelled by a misguided sense of chivalry, he confessed, determined to save another classmate, the beautiful and vulnerable Terry McLaughlin, from having to testify at his trial. When the truth came out, Chris was released from prison, married Terry—pregnant with his child—and changed his last name to Donatti. He also became a professional killer.

Peter Decker was the detective on the case, and over the years, he and Terry kept in touch. Now his friend is in L.A. and asking for a favor. Though Decker knows full well that getting involved will bring Terry's sociopathic husband back into his life, the obsessive and duty-bound LAPD lieutenant reluctantly agrees. The favor soon becomes complicated when Terry goes missing and Donatti disappears, leaving their fourteen-year-old son, Gabe, with no one to turn to except Decker and his wife, Rina Lazarus.

But Peter's search for Terry must share center stage with a gruesome murder. Adrianna Blanc, a neonatal nurse at St. Timothy's Hospital, had signed off her night shift at eight a.m. Six hours later, a foreman supervising the construction of a house in a nearby suburb discovered her body swinging from the rafters, a cable wire around her neck. Her car was found where she had parked it the night before, with no signs of foul play.

A dedicated and conscientious professional, Adrianna had a circle of close friends. Yet as Decker and his able team soon learn, the young woman also had her share of detractors. A party-hearty girl, she enjoyed booze, kinky sex, and revenge-cheating on her boyfriend, Garth Hammerling, another nurse at St. Tim's. Suspicions heat up when Decker and his team find that one of Adrianna's last phone calls was a provocative and disturbing message to her vacationing boyfriend—who himself has vanished without a trace. Was Adrianna's death something personal because of her carefree lifestyle? Or was this unusually cruel and very dramatic murder the first signs of a serial killer? With lives hanging in the balance, Decker and his colleagues, Sergeant Marge Dunn and Detective Scott Oliver, need to find answers and fast.

As if juggling two investigations weren't enough for the lieutenant (not to mention turning sixty!), things are becoming even more dangerous with his precarious home life. Ever the concerned parent, Decker wants to look after Terry's son, Gabe. Yet who will protect his own family? Because if there's one thing he knows for sure, with a sociopath like Donatti on the loose, no one is ever really safe.

This is one of my favorites of a great series. I love that Chris Donatti is back in the picture and the series is set up for him to remain so for awhile now. Only complaint is that Decker "guessed" the reason for Terry's disappearance WAY too easily.

Grave Secret (Harper Connelly Mysteries, Book 4) Review

I borrowed this book from the library after having bought the Kindle edition of the first three because I refused to pay .99 for it. Nonetheless I wish it was cheaper because I'd love to have this book.
Having read the other reviews I'll make mine short and simple. I love mysteries and I found the Harper Connelly mysteries to be good. This was not the best of the series, because I was able to guess who it was before it was revealed...I know not a real big deal. I didn't find the book either rushed or a hodge-podge of several lines like some of the reviews. The books mystery is fairly simple...Who killed Harper's sister Cameron. There is a side mystery of the Joyce's, but you find in the end that they are all connected...and that was a surprise for me. The book tells some more about Harper's and Tolliver's childhood, but really it was just a confirmation of what the other books had either told or hinted at, or at least it was for me because growing up I knew a lot of kids who were in the same boat.
Why did I chose the above title...well from Harper's comment in the third book about how she and Tolliver would make-up a story about how the heroine would live the rest of her life, and that's how we are left with Harper and Tolliver. I hope we see more of Harper and Tolliver and the mysteries they find because I really enjoyed trying to outwit them and figure out who had done the murder.

I think this book is by far the best in the series.Everything comes together and Harper finally gets the answers she needs.

Great book, but may freak some of you out.... - Levenia R. Lawson - Castro Valley, CA United States
I really enjoyed this book and it was nice seeing our characters move forward with their lives. Granted if you are a "traditionalist" you may find things a little distrurbing. Get over it and enjoy the ride. I am looking forward to more books in this series and hope that Charlaine Harris keeps them coming.

Something Missing. - Mae Doe -
I agree that something is missing in this book. It seemed written half-heartedly, and then everything was thrown together for a hasty conclusion. I liked that there was an answer to the torment that caused Harper to go on the road, but it sucked that it was her other brother or non-brother, considering she is now doing her other non-brother and marries him. This romantic line is the picture perfect trailer trash Jerry Springer wet dream, and although it is not technically illegal, it seems wrong. On paper, you want to take up for them, as they grew up together, no longer related and in love. However, if this was your brother and sister (the two little ones in the book), wouldn't you just die?! I know I would, legal or not! Anyway, in conclusion, I am glad that the great mystery of where the dead sister was and why she died was solved. I hated the romantic relationship between Harper and brother and the fact that brother killed sister. I also felt disappointed in the rushed ending, especially since it ended the series entirely. However, where else could it have gone from there? CH was right to end it.

Night Vision Review

This is the sequel to "To Speak for the Dead," and if anything, it's even more chilling! Someone is attacking women who log onto an Internet sex-chat room. Deep, rich characters with a cast of South Florida whacko possible villains. Jake Lassiter is on the case, this time as a specially appointed investigator. If you didn't read the first book, you can start here, the two stories are separate and distinct. Lassiter is a sexy hunk of a lawyer (I've never met one, personally!) He's an ex-football player who went to night law school, and what he lacks in brilliance, he makes up for in toughness and his own brand of honesty. He hooks up with a hot English lady shrink, goes to London, and...wait...no spoilers! It's a dynamite read with an ending that will knock your socks off. Did I mention it's funny, too? Sounds strange, I know, in a book about a serial killer, but Levine has a method of bringing humor to nearly every situation. Can't wait for the next one. (On Levine's website, it says "9 Scorpions" will be on Kindle in a few days. It's a thriller set at the Supreme Court and is next on my TBR list).

Night Vision Overview

The murder of one of the computer dating service Compu-Mate's clients sends Miami trial lawyer Jake Lassiter and retired coroner Dr. Charlie Riggs on the trail of a killer that leads them to a London insane asylum. Reprint. K.

Jake Lassiter is my favorite lawyer - Legal Thriller Aficionado -
I'd read that Author Levine won the John D. MacDonald award. Those Travis McGee books were my favorites, so I dug into Levine's Lassiter series and his Supreme Court thriller, "9 Scorpions." What's cool about "Night Vision" is that it was written before there was much in the news about Internet stalkers. The book puts Lassiter on the opposite side of his usual position. He's appointed a special prosecutor to go after a serial killer preying on women in a highly sexual Internet chat room. One of Levine's most intriguing characters is in this one, a British woman psychiatrist who studies serial killers. Lassiter travels from Miami to London, where there's a scene in a hospital for the criminally insane that's a classic. Funny and chilling at the same time. In fact, that's one of Levine's strong points. All his books have humor, even when the topic is grim. As with "9 Scorpions," I recommend this one highly!

"The sexual revolution has been repealed by a vote of the electorate." - Shelley Brewster - Palm Beach, FL
That's one of my favorite lines in the book. Lassiter mixes football and bedroom metaphors as he considers his past as a former lady's man. "Jake Lassiter, number 58, placed on waivers, emotionally unable to perform. Refuses to hit and run. Welcome to the grown-up world, Lassiter. I'm proud of you." Paul Levine's writing style reminds me a lot of John D. MacDonald, whose Travis McGee novels taught me a lot about Florida, even before I moved here. There's a little bit of Carl Hiaasen here, too, but the humor isn't so outlandish. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but one caveat: If you object to rough language or sexual situations, this may not be for you. It's interesting to read this book along with Levine's 9 SCORPIONS, a legal thriller at the Supreme Court. Jake Lassiter is tough street lawyer. Samuel Truitt is a brilliant Supreme Court justice. Both guys find there's not a lot of justice in the Justice System. The books are different, but each has a very strong protagonist and I recommend each one!

"Woman Is The Lesser Man..." - J. H. Minde - Boca Raton, Florida and Brooklyn, New York
NIGHT VISION is author Paul Levine's second outing with ex-Miami Dolphin-turned-lawyer Jake Lassiter. Written in 1990 ("Too soon for the WWW" as Levine once lamented), the story of NIGHT VISION concerns a serial killer using an Internet chat service to troll for victims, a novel idea at the time (no pun intended).

While too many of the one-liners are retreads from TO SPEAK FOR THE DEAD, Levine has a stronger grasp on Lassiter's character this time around. Lassiter's social commentary on South Florida is piercing, and Lassiter himself seems less bumbling, hence less foolish, than in the earlier novel.

The actual hunt for the signature killer is engaging, though the intervening fifteen years since NIGHT VISION was first published have added immensely to the professional literature on serial killers. Levine's research on multiple-murders consequently appears a little thin, circa 2005. It seems a flaw but it isn't.

There are flaws. Levine unfortunately distracts himself with too many two-bit characters who add nothing to the story, and by adding nothing, dilute the plot. The interrelationships between the characters are "Six Degrees of Separation"-ish, as all the protagonists know or are sleeping with each other.

The humor seems a little forced at times. Levine simply tried too hard in spots. Not every comment requires a snappy rejoinder.

Still, NIGHT VISION compels you to keep turning its pages. Jake Lassiter is the kind of guy you'd want for a friend or neighbor, and he's at least competent at his profession (high praise, when one considers the public view of lawyers nowadays); it's a pleasure to find a J.D. who's not an S.O.B.

Enjoyable light reading that comes well recommended.

Police officer Jack Daniels is also a terrifically well-rounded character (evident from the teaser chapters). SHAKEN looks like it's gonna be a gripping, captivating mystery that packs a wallop. Tough Customer: A Novel Review

Sandra Brown's books have always been a little bit hit or miss for me. After the last few months of getting so-so books to read, I thought I'd probably end up being disappointed in "Tough Customer", as well. My track record for books has just been horrible this summer.

The first couple or three chapters drew me in. When the flashbacks started, and when Dodge and Caroline meet, I could honestly care less. That part of the book was just not interesting in the least to this reader. Yeah, they hate each other. Yeah, they had a relationship in the past (big duh-they have a child together). Give it a couple paragraphs but get back to the main story. I skimmed through probably 80% of the flashbacks throughout the book.

What was interesting to me was the main storyline. The heroine was flawed, was aware of her flaws and was working to change them. It took her from being someone a reader really might not like into being someone who gained this reader's sympathy.

I didn't expect the two twists at the end of the book. Those were completely surprising, and I liked it. If I had been more on top of my game, I probably could have predicted the twist, but I was having an off day, and was pleasantly surprised. (Hey, there has to be something positive about off days, right?)

Two of the things about this book that really, deeply annoyed me, though, was the hero's name. I went through half the book trying to figure out if he was 'skee' or 'sky'. I wondered if his name was a trendy, hippie love-child thing, or what. An explanation sooner would have been beneficial. Teh second thing that irked me was the fact that the hero never sleeps. Um, not humanly possible. This jerked me out of the story, because I know that anyone who is as sleep deprived as the hero is a danger. Not someone I'd call for help if I knew he was that tired.

All in all, I liked this book. It was interesting, for the most part, a fun read, and while not going on my favorites shelf, I would recommend it.

Not good couldn't finish it. Her characters as usual since she started writing crime novels are not interesting at all. The story you don't care about ither. I would say to be a good writer develop characters people care about, ( indepth ones) and make sure the story is worth following. Not deep enough for me.

Right Ho, Jeeves ($.99 Popular Classics) Review

particularly when Bertie Wooster lends a hand.

Once again all the principals are in place, Bertie Wooster has returned from a few weeks on the Riviera with one of his numerous Aunts to discover his man Jeeves has taken to giving advice of the romantic sort to Bertie's pals. Since Bertie and Jeeves are engaged in one of their many battles of will over Bertie's wardrobe Bertie quickly decides to take over the task. Soon Bertie finds himself in a stately country home, and embroiled in a romance himself! With more than a few hilarious twists and turns all ends up well, but not before Jeeves has arrived on the scene.

In the Wodehouse world it is always that lovely era between the Wars when smart young things had the time and money to spend long weekends in stately English country houses to recuperate from nights spent at the theatre and various nightclubs. Everyone knows everyone else and still manages to become involved in complicated misunderstandings that would make Shakespeare proud.

Fans of the 1eeves and Wooster series featuring Frye and Laurie will undoubtedly recognize this one, but knowing how the story ends will in no way diminish the delight of reading about the misadventures along the way.

This review is based on the Kindle version of the novel, a particular delight since it was located and delivered on a dreary night in a matter of minutes at no charge.

Right Ho, Jeeves ($.99 Popular Classics) Overview

The Devil In The White City - Murder, Magic, And Madness At The Fair That Changed America Review

This wasn't exactly what I expected. I expected the story of the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair to be just a backdrop to the story of the atrocities of serial killer Henry H. Holmes. It turns out that it was two separate stories that just happened to take place at the same time in the same city. At first I found the abrupt switching back and forth between the stories a little jarring, but I eventually became immersed in the narrative which was a tale of two architects - an architect of beauty and an architect of death.

Larson's contrast of the two charming and attractive men - one designing and building a castle of fear and death and the other designing and creating a city of awe and beauty - was fascinating. Surprisingly, I found the story of the Worlds Fair much more interesting than the story of the serial killer. The two main stories are also peppered with appearances from historical celebrities and other memorable news events from the period. Larson weaves primary source material such as newspaper articles, correspondence, contracts and other legal documents, and menus and programs from events to really bring the people and their stories to life.

I wasn't very impressed with Larson's writing style. He tended to be very repetitive. Either he didn't remember that he had already offered certain facts or observations before, or he has a very low estimation of his readers' intelligence. He also used foreshadowing verbiage throughout the two stories that was reminiscent of the script for the sensationalist television crime show "City Confidential". But Larson IS a good story-teller, and if you can overlook the repetition and his almost comical foreshadowing technique, you will enjoy this tale of two architects.

Split Image (Jesse Stone, No. 9) Overview

Family ties prove deadly in the brilliant new Jesse Stone novel from New York Times-bestselling author Robert B. Parker.

The body in the trunk was just the beginning.

Turns out the stiff was a foot soldier for local tough guy Reggie Galen, now enjoying a comfortable "retirement" with his beautiful wife, Rebecca, in the nicest part of Paradise. Living next door are Knocko Moynihan and his wife, Robbie, who also happens to be Rebecca's twin. But what initially appears to be a low-level mob hit takes on new meaning when a high-ranking crime figure is found dead on Paradise Beach.

Stressed by the case, his failed relationship with his ex-wife, and his ongoing battle with the bottle, Jesse needs something to keep him from spinning out of control. When private investigator Sunny Randall comes into town on a case, she asks for Jesse's help. As their professional and personal relationships become intertwined, both Jesse and Sunny realize that they have much in common with both their victims and their suspects-and with each other.

Quick -- but not very satisfying -- read - Noneofyourbiz - Oak Park, IL
Reading this after Dr. Parker's passing makes it difficult to review. It's hard to separate the book from the poignancy of the event. Robert Parker was a prolific craftsman, a writer who entertained me for so long and I hold many of his characters close to my heart.

But unfortunately Split Image is not a very good book.

Most of my issues come from the addition of Sunny Randall to a Jesse Stone story. While I like both characters, and have hopes that they can make one another happy, in this book her presence is an annoying distraction.

First of all, her relationship with Susan Silverman made me uncomfortable. What's with the girl-crush? Even after the shrink explains to Sunny why she's so fixated on Silverman's clothes and make up and manner, it's not abated. One wonders why Parker devoted so much space to Sunny's adolescent adoration, and whether somehow Spenser was going to be introduced to some future Sunny story which, unfortunately, we'll never get to see.

I also can't believe that in 21st century Massachusettes, especially among young people like the girl Sunny and Spike try to help, that Spike's homosexuality is even an issue, much less the fascinating curiosity it's presented as here.

And last, there's a scene in this book, where Jesse meets with the women of the religious cult and asks them what's up, that feels like a virtual lift from an earlier story about a Paradise swingers' club.

If you're a fan of either series, you'll want to read this book. Otherwise, I don't think there's much to recommend it.

Split Image - Bruce A. Lane -
As always Robert Parker writes a good story. Robert Parker will be missed, and with him, his characters.

Eh!! - William G. Straub - Silver Spring, MD
Somehow when Parker teams Jesse Stone and Sunny Randall together, it stops being a great read. The story was so, so and the ending was just that. The book ended. I love the Jesse Stone books and have never read any Sunny Randall. Maybe I should get a Sunny Randall book to see what it is like, b/c the two of them just did not "make it" for me. I want to sincerely thank Robert Parker for all the great hours of reading that he has given me for many, many years. Fantastic author and may he rest in eternal peace and his family has my deep condolences. Wonderful author just missed on this one.

Tooth And Nail Review

With the world looking like it's going to Hell in a Handbasket, I've been drawn to lots of Zombie Lit lately and this is the best new work I've read all year. It is written primarily from the perspective of a small military unit, which adds a unique flavor to the story. The characters are well-developed, the story line is plausible and I was engaged enough to read the whole thing in just a couple of days. While often times stories like this are written from the perspective of Everyman/Everywoman coping with the apocalypse and hoping for the military to show up, this author obviously took the time to educate himself on how the military would be used in a situation such as this and analyze the unique problems that they would experience. I really enjoyed this work and hope to see more, although I'm not sure enough main characters are left from this story for a sequel, sadly enough.

Tooth And Nail Overview

As a new plague related to the rabies virus infects millions, America recalls its military forces from around the world to safeguard hospitals and other vital buildings. Many of the victims become rabid and violent but are easily controlled-that is, until so many are infected that they begin to run amok, spreading slaughter and disease. Lieutenant Todd Bowman got his unit through the horrors of combat in Iraq. Now he must lead his men across New York through a storm of violence to secure a research facility that may hold a cure. To succeed in this mission to help save what's left of society, the men of Second Platoon will face a terrifying battle of survival against the very people they have sworn to protect-people turned into a fearless, endless horde armed solely with tooth and nail.

The Real U.S. Army - Thomas E. Ramsey - New Jersey
From Beginning to end this is one great story! Regular Army Troops are being pulled from overseas combat and being sent to the U.S. to assist and contain a strange illness that makes its victim's become very aggresive and later much, much worse. The story is told through the eyes of grunts, from their LT, to PFC. There are militay terms etc used but even if you don't know them, you begin to fell real pride in our young men and how they work as teams against a horrible enemy. The medical staff and the How and Why are really explored and only add's to the final Custer's last stand battle.

Starts off a little shakey, but ends with a bang - E. Gmutza - Indianapolis, IN United States
I *almost* gave up on this book a few chapters in. The present-tense writing style was distracting, the characters were difficult to distinguish from one another, and some of the dialog was pretty terrible. I'm glad I stuck with it though, as once the action got going, the present-tense approach added quite a bit of urgency and the dialog became less of an issue for me. While none of the characters ever really stood out, the ending was still very poignant. The author clearly has a lot of respect for the troops and managed to tell a surprisingly affecting story about a truly heroic group of people stuck in a no-win situation.

Best Book I read all year! - ChyAnna Lawson - Seattle, WA
By far, this is the best book I've read all year. So gritty, raw and engaging. This has made the other novels I'm reading [I love to read multiple books at a time] seem elementary and uninspired. I never thought I'd enjoy a military fiction book, but this may have converted me. This book will not disappoint.

The English Assassin Review

In this second installment of the Gabriel Allon series we find our sensitive and scarred spy taking on the Swiss bankers who helped the Nazis during WWII and are still hiding old Jewish money and treasure under the boardwalks of Zurich.

As in the first novel, "The Kill Artist (Gabriel Allon)", the reluctant Israeli spy Gabriel Allon is joined by a world famous woman, this time though she is a violinist named Anna Rolfe, on his adventures. As in his previous novels, Mr. Silva brings back characters he created in the "Silva Universe" which are always a pleasure to reacquaint with. The novel is a mystery within a mystery - after recovering some missing paintings Allon goes after the Swiss banking cartel that has been hiding them. In the midst of the all the globetrotting, Allon has to avoid assassination attempts from a worthy adversary, an English assassin, however the least said the better in order to avoid spoiling the story.

Silva's narrative is fast paced and uncluttered. The book's descriptions are detailed but not over bearing and the action sequences are brutal and effective. The characters do not get lost within the book's descriptive prose; they are all individuals, rich and well rounded. The incredible historical research is pouring out of the book, the insight into the world of art restoring is distinct and refreshing, but still manages to be engrossing as well as entertaining.

I felt that the first half of the book was much better than the second half which seemed, to me, to be stretched. However, this is a delightful read and as in the previous Silva books keeps the characters full of shades of gray - it's difficult to say who is the good guy or the bad guy because Silva makes a wonderful, even though not too convincing case, for each (except the Nazis of course).

The English Assassin Overview

The Unlikely Spy, Daniel Silva's extraordinary debut novel, was applauded by critics as it rocketed onto national bestseller lists. Now Silva has outdone himself, with a taut, lightning-paced thriller rooted assuredly in fact: Switzerland's shameful WWII record of profiteering and collaboration with Nazi Germany.

When art restorer and occasional Israeli agent Gabriel Allon is sent to Zurich, Switzerland, to restore the painting of a reclusive millionaire banker, he arrives to find his would-be employer murdered at the foot of his Raphael. A secret collection of priceless, illicitly gained Impressionist masterpieces is missing. Gabriel's handlers step out of the shadows to admit the truth-the collector had been silenced-and Gabriel is put back in the high-stakes spy game, battling wits with the rogue assassin he helped to train.

Tense, taut, expertly crafted, and brimming with unexpected reversals, The English Assassin is Daniel Silva at his storytelling best.

Amazon Exclusive Essay: Daniel Silva on Gabriel Allon and the "Accidental Series"

Writers tend to be solitary creatures. We toil alone for months on end, then, once a year, we emerge from our dens to publish a book. It can be a daunting experience, especially for someone like me, who is not gregarious and outgoing by nature. But there is one aspect of promotion I truly love: meeting my readers and answering their questions. During each stop on my book tour, I reserve the bulk of my time for a lively conversation with the audience. I learn much from these encounters-indeed, some of the comments are so insightful they take my breath away. There is one question I am asked each night without fail, and it remains my favorite: "How in the world did you ever think of Gabriel Allon?" The answer is complicated. In one sense, he was the result of a long, character-construction process. In another, he was a bolt from the blue. I'll try to explain.

In 1999, after publishing The Marching Season, the second book in the Michael Osbourne series, I decided it was time for a change. We were nearing the end of the Clinton administration, and the president was about to embark on a last-ditch effort to bring peace to the Middle East. I had the broad outlines of a story in mind: a retired Israeli assassin is summoned from retirement to track down a Palestinian terrorist bent on destroying the Oslo peace process. I thought long and hard before giving the Israeli a name. I wanted it to be biblical, like my own, and to be heavy with symbolism. I finally decided to name him after the archangel Gabriel. As for his family name, I chose something short and simple: Allon, which means "oak tree" in Hebrew. I liked the image it conveyed. Gabriel Allon: God's angel of vengeance, solid as an oak.

Gabriel's professional résumé-the operations he had carried out-came quickly. But what about his other side? What did he like to do in his spare time? What was his cover? I knew I wanted something distinct. Something memorable. Something that would, in many respects, be the dominant attribute of his character. I spent many frustrating days mulling over and rejecting possibilities. Then, while walking along one of Georgetown's famous redbrick sidewalks, my wife, Jamie, reminded me that we had a dinner date that evening at the home of David Bull, a man regarded as one of the finest art restorers in the world. I stopped dead in my tracks and raised my hands toward the heavens. Gabriel Allon was complete. He was going to be an art restorer, and a very good one at that.

Over my objections, the book was entitled The Kill Artist and it would go on to become a New York Times bestseller. It was not, however, supposed to be the first book in a long-running series. But once again, fate intervened. In 2000, after moving to G.P. Putnam & Sons, my new publishers asked me what I was working on. When I mumbled something about having whittled it down to two or three options, they offered their first piece of advice. They really didn't care what it was about, they just wanted one thing: Gabriel Allon.

I then spent the next several minutes listing all the reasons why Gabriel, now regarded as one of the most compelling and successful continuing characters in the mystery-thriller genre, should never appear in a second book. I had conceived him as a "one off" character, meaning he would be featured in one story and then ride into the sunset. I also thought he was too melancholy and withdrawn to build a series around, and, at nearly fifty years of age, perhaps a bit too old as well. My biggest concern, however, had to do with his nationality and religion. I thought there was far too much opposition to Israel in the world-and far too much raw anti-Semitism-for an Israeli continuing character ever to be successful in the long term.

My new publishers thought otherwise, and told me so. Because Gabriel lived in Europe and could pass as German or Italian, they believed he came across as more "international" than Israeli. But what they really liked was Gabriel's other job: art restoration. They found the two opposing sides of his character-destroyer and healer-fascinating. What's more, they believed he would stand alone on the literary landscape. There were lots of CIA officers running around saving the world, they argued, but no former Israeli assassins who spent their spare time restoring Bellini altarpieces.

The more they talked, the more I could see their point. I told them I had an idea for a story involving Nazi art looting during the Second World War and the scandalous activities of Swiss banks. "Write it with Gabriel Allon," they said, "and we promise it will be your biggest-selling book yet." Eventually, the book would be called The English Assassin, and, just as Putnam predicted, it sold twice as many copies as its predecessor. Oddly enough, when it came time to write the next book, I still wasn't convinced it should be another Gabriel novel. Though it seems difficult to imagine now, I actually conceived the plot of The Confessor without him in mind. Fortunately, my editor, Neil Nyren, saved me from myself. The book landed at #5 on the New York Times bestseller list and received some of the warmest reviews of my career. After that, a series was truly born.

I am often asked whether it is necessary to read the novels in sequence. The answer is no, but it probably doesn't hurt, either. For the record, the order of publication is The Kill Artist, The English Assassin, The Confessor, A Death in Vienna, Prince of Fire, The Messenger, The Secret Servant, and Moscow Rules, my first #1 New York Times bestseller. The Defector pits Gabriel in a final, dramatic confrontation with the Russian oligarch and arms dealer Ivan Kharkov, and I have been told it far surpasses anything that has come before it in the series. And to think that, if I'd had my way, only one Gabriel Allon book would have been written. I remain convinced, however, that had I set out in the beginning to create him as a continuing character, I would surely have failed. I have always believed in the power of serendipity. Art, like life, rarely goes according to plan. Gabriel Allon is proof of that.

Not Quite up to the Expectations I had - Lael Prock - Mercer Island, Washington
I really, really liked The Kill Artist and immediately got The English Assassin. It just wasn't quite as good. Not that it was bad as I still enjoyed it a lot but the Kill Artist was just so damn good that it raised my expectations to perhaps an unreasonable level. I didn't understand why the Englishman didn't kill Anna when he was paid to do it and then killed Gessler when he wasn't paid to do it. Also Peterson's sudden conversion to good guy really didn't ring true. It was clear that Gessler wouldn't believe his story and have him killed. But I will soon take on the next in the series and see how that goes.

A Spell-binding Story - W. Terry Whalin - Scottsdale, Arizona
I loved reading THE ENGLISH ASSASSIN and found the story a page-turner. It's my fourth Daniel Silva book and I've become a fan of his characterization and stories. It's perfect for a few evenings of great entertainment.

Bummer!! - J. Wolford - Joliet, IL United States
I've read Silva's later books and they are exceptional, esp. Moscow Rules and The Defector. The earlier books were also excellent, too. This book, however, just died about 3/4 of the way through--and the last chapter??? What the heck???? How'd the Englishman bypass all the security? Why didn't his boss do more than chew him out, and have him killed, for not completing his assignment? What a disappointment.

Although this book is a let down, please read his later books. What a difference.

Glass Houses (The Morganville Vampires) Review

Shallow confession time: I almost didn't read Glass Houses because I was put off by the cover. I'm just far enough out of the age demographic to find goth characters pretty offputting. But I'd heard so many good things about Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampire books, I had to give it a try. I'm glad I didn't judge the book by it's proverbial cover, because I would have missed an introduction to one of the most intriguing paranormal YA series I've encountered in a long time.

The vampires in Morganville don't sparkle. They aren't romanticized or crush-worthy. They're superior, hard-core killers that run the town of Morganville and offer lucky residents Protection for their fealty and a monthly, required blood donation. College students like 16-year-old prodigy Claire aren't so lucky. The transient population in town has a way of disappearing, and lots of people turn their heads when they do.

This is bad news for Claire, who made a powerful enemy in the dorms. She feels her life is at risk, and begins a desperate search for a new place to live after the threat turns physical. Claire stumbles upon the opportunity of a lifetime when she answers a roommate ad for the Glass House, a spooky old gothic mansion on the outskirts of campus. Not only is it a safe, spacious property full of mysterious rooms and a strange energy, her new roommates (goth Eve, sarcastic jock Shane and mysterious day-sleeping musician, Michael) offer her a chance for friends and a real home. Unfortunately, life away from the house isn't so safe for a young girl without a bracelet to signify Protection, and Claire finds herself the target of vampires with a grudge. After one of her roommates saves her life, Claire makes a deal with the enemy, goes on a search for an ancient and coveted vampire relic, and discovers that there are more secrets in Morganville than she ever imagined.

I haven't read any of Caine's adult novels, like her popular Weather Warden series, but I'm eager to do so after this introduction. Her characters are likeable and well-written. The dialogue is witty and believable, and the dynamic of the four Scooby-esque roomies reminded me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- in a good way. The whole thing was well-written and humorous, without sacrificing the horror elements that are the cornerstone of the vampire novel genre. And it's kind of refreshing to read a book with scary vampires again, to be frank.

Glass Houses introduced an ambitious amount of plot for a first book in a series, and the cliff hanger ending was really annoying. But overall, I really enjoyed the book. I will seek out Dead Girls Dance, the next book in the series, as soon as I can.

Glass Houses (The Morganville Vampires) Overview

From the author of the popular Weather Warden series comes the debut of an exciting new series set in Morganville, Texas, where you would be well advised to avoid being out after dark.

A Vampire Series with Bite (pun intended) - J. Meegan - Silicon Valley, CA
Glass Houses, the first of the Morganville Vampire books, does an excellent job of drawing the reader in and establishing sympathy for the main character right off the bat. I like how it isn't terribly clear who the possible romantic lead will be until halfway through the book....and the character relationships seem to unfold in a "natural" way without rushing or forcing things too quickly. I also really enjoyed how the lines between good and bad blur a lot, even sometimes with regards to the main characters. And the world-building that goes on within this story is quite elaborate and detailed, something I always look for in a fantasy/sci-fi-type book.

Claire, the main character, is a great "every girl" who the reader can quickly identify with. We rarely, if ever, get a sense of her appearance other than the most superficial details (what color are her eyes? hair? etc)which allows the reader to "plug and play" right off the bat. The banter between the male leads and the collective roommates is truly a wonder to behold...I'm going to guess the author either has sons of her own, brothers, or spent some time teaching high school/college-aged kids. The guys really act like guys...no cheesy lines and unrealistic flowery, sappy declarations. And the bad girl, Monica, is a mean-girl on steroids. Claire can sometimes come across as too-good-to-be-true in the choices she makes (considering she's the youngest character in the book) but at least she's a strong role model which is more than I can say about other female leads I've come across in the genre.

Overall, this is an entertaining read and the series is worth delving into. Of the MANY teen series books out there, this series rises to the top of the heap as a stellar-example of "how to do a teen urban fantasy series without screwing it up". Not all the books in the series are flawless, and this book has its little moments as well, but I think overall...the collective series manages to continue the plot and develop the characters in believable ways (as believable as one might expect in a book about vampires, of course) without losing sight of the details that keep the story cohesive and closely linked together.

Trisha's Book Blog Review - Trisha's Book Blog "Trisha" - USA
I loved this book, I read it all in one day, and actually stayed up late into the night finishing it.
I really liked the character of Claire, she is a smart 16-year-old who is a freshman at college already. Claire knows she doesn't fit in, but she didn't know how much until one day she was pushed down the stairs and beaten by some of the other girls. So, Claire decides to leave campus and find somewhere else to live. She finds an ad in the paper and calls a taxi to take her to the address, which is not what she expected.
I loved her roommates. She finds out a big secret about one, why he is always gone during the day, and falls in love with another one, and becomes great friends with one. They all have great chemistry together.
The book has a lot of twists and turns and leaves you guessing on every page. There is a lot of action as well, it is just an all around great book. On to book 2.

Glass Houses - Shari S. Bergquist - V.A.
4.5! I'm really late getting to these books and I don't know why! I really loved the first book in The Morganville Vampires series and can't wait to read more about Claire, Eve, Micheal, and Shane. Claire is a college freshman but she's only 16, she graduated early with a 4.0 grade average. Claire wanted to go to a college like Yale, Caltech or MIT but her parents felt she was to young to be that far away from them. That's how she ends up at Texas Prairie University in Morganville. Little did they know that Claire would have been so much better off far, far, away from Morganville. When Claire is thrown down the stairs by another girl from her dorm she decides that she needs to find another place to live and fast. Soon after she meets Eve and learns that Morganville is indeed a strange place to live and why so many students transfer out of TPU so quickly. If you haven't started reading The Morganville Vampires series you are seriously missing out on a great read.
