After a busy night working at Merlotte's Sookie Stackhouse was driving home. She and Vampire Bill were still on the 'outs' and were likely to stay that way at least until he returned from his research trip to Peru. The hunky Werewolf Alcide was back with his former girlfriend, Debbie so Sookie had nothing waiting for her at home but a hot shower and a lonely bed. Suddenly her headlights shone on a man running down the lonely country road. Sookie thought of all the reasons that picking up a stranger, a male stranger, a half dressed male stranger was a very bad idea. And then, being kindhearted Sookie Stackhouse she stopped and rolled down her car window. To her surprise the stranger was Eric, the Vampire Sheriff of Louisiana who had sent her and her former boyfriend Bill off on dangerous assignments in the past. Even though Sookie was not certain whether knowing the stranger was Eric made picking him up less dangerous or more so she opened the door and let him get into the car. So much for the quiet evening at home!

Sookie soon discovered that Eric had lost his memory, there were even more supernatural beings around Bon Temps than she had suspected - including witches, of more than one variety - and then Jason disappeared. All of this kept Sookie busy for the next few days, which was at least a distraction from worrying about her ever present money problems.

This is the series that the popular HBO series is based upon. The main characters are the same but there are numerous differences in the plot lines so readers should not expect to go seamlessly between the books and tv series. There is also a strong overall series story arc here so for maximum enjoyment the reader should begin with DEAD UNTIL DARK and proceed in order as much as possible. These delightful comic/paranormal/mystery/romance novels are a wonderful way to spend a few hours and will soon have the reader eagerly looking for the next book in the series.

Eric and Sookie...WOW! Everything else fell flat! - January Dockery - Georgia
This is book #4 in the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) series. In this book Sookie finds herself single again and Bill is in Peru. Sookie finds Eric on the side of the road naked and his memory seems to be erased by a witches spell. Sookie's brother Jason soon after goes missing and Sookie has to find him and the witch to get the spell broken for Eric. In the meantime Sookie develops feelings for Eric and he also has feelings for her.

This book had great parts to it and then very boring parts as well! I loved every scene with Eric and Sookie in it. I love these two together! I enjoyed Bill being away (I am not a big fan of his), but other than that the book was a little disappointing. The witches weren't as interesting to me as they should have been and all the searching for Jason was boring! I skimmed a lot in this book and I don't normally do that.

I have to say the last 2 chapters were awesome and the ending was very interesting! I did enjoy this book and I will be reading the next book, I just thought this book lacked things that the last two seemed to have! I found myself wanting more scenes with her and Eric and less scenes of her hunting through the woods for her brother!

The Sookie Stackhouse books have been pretty well-written, and lots of fun so far. The things I have enjoyed the most in the series are the developing romance between Sookie and Bill, and the absolutely terrific descriptions of their encounters in bed. Forget all that in the 4th installment. The author has fallen back on those old standbys -- plot and action, and forgot to deliver the romance, and the action between the sheets.

The fast paced story is still competently written, but the effect is just to trivialize the mysterious and alluring Sookie, bringing her down to the level of every other plucky and resourceful heroine. And she has gone from fresh excitement at her discovery of sexual love, to almost-bed-hopping with every interesting superhuman who shows up. I can get plot and action and meaningless sex anywhere. Well-written, exciting love scenes are much harder to find. I have the next 5 books in the series on my shelf, ready to read. And I will read them, no matter what. But I sincerely hope that Ms. Harris has returned to the heart-wrenching, tingling love scenes between Bill and Sookie. Othewise I'm back to my search for well-written love and romance.
